About Yavilah McCoy
Yavilah Mccoy is a teacher, writer, diversity consultant, and gifted performer. She is also an African-American Jew, raised in the Flatbush and Crown Heights areas of Brooklyn, New York. After attending Hassidic elementary schools and Yeshivah University High School, Yavilah received her undergraduate and graduate training at SUNY Albany and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Ms. McCoy has taught Judaic Studies, Hebrew, and English Literature in elementary and secondary schools over the last twenty years. She is a trained facilitator for the Anti Defamation League’s “A World of Difference” Program, The National Conference for Community and Justice’s Dismantling Racism Institute, and the National Coalition Building Institute of Washington, DC. Yavilah has served as a member of the board of directors for the Anti-Defamation League, Jewish Family and Children’s Services, Hadassah, and the Jewish Community Relations Council.
In 2000, Yavilah was one of eight recipients of the Joshua Venture Fellowship for Jewish Social Entrepreneurs. With funding received from Joshua Venture, Yavilah founded Ayecha, a nonprofit providing resources for Jewish Diversity and advocacy for Jews of Color in the United States. In 2008, after directing Ayecha for eight years, Yavilah assumed the New England directorship of The Curriculum Initiative, (TCI), a non-profit educational consultancy that serviced close to 600 prep schools across the nation. Currently, McCoy works within her newest project, Dimensions Consulting, to offer creative, strategic, and meaningful diversity resources. McCoy’s goal is to utilize her diverse history, talent and experience to expand awareness of the many ways that “service” can incorporate depth, dimension, variety, and passion. McCoy believes that anyone operating within any service environment can benefit from introspecting upon and contextualizing the “gifts” of diversity within the framework of leadership, citizenship, and pursuit of excellence. In addition to consulting, Yavilah enjoys teaching and performing her family’s legacy of Jewish Gospel.
